FAVOURITE COUPLE ACTIVITIES ROMANCE HAWAI‘I 19 Be spoilt for choice when it comes to what is on offer across this remarkable island. Whether you’re after an action-packed adventure or secluded escape, O‘ahu has it all. Favourite couple activities on O‘ahu include: Check out First Fridays when Chinatown’s hip galleries, bistros and antique stores open late with live music (first Friday of each month). Hike the 3.2 km Diamond Head trail to take in the extraordinary panorama stretching from Waikīkī to Koko Head Crater. Hire a motor scooter to explore the scenic coast, stopping at a secluded beach to picnic. Alternatively, sit back and sip champagne on an island limousine tour. Learn to surf, SUP (stand-up paddle board) and ride an outrigger canoe on Waikīkī Beach or at one of O‘ahu’s many other beaches. And, if visiting during winter, drive to the North Shore to watch — from the safety of shore — the world’s best surfers ride Hawai‘i’s biggest waves. Make a shopping list! From bursting-with-freshness farmers’ markets to world-class designer boutiques, it’s all here on O‘ahu. Popular shopping precincts include Waikele Premium Outlets, malls such as the Ala Moana Center and Royal Hawaiian Center, T Galleria for duty free, and the elegant 3.2 hectare Waikiki Beach Walk and 2100 Kalākaua Avenue. Sample local specialties. Head for the North Shore’s world-famous shrimp trucks to taste delicious Kahuku shrimp. Then refresh with a ‘shave ice’ (ice-based dessert) flavoured with local ingredients such as guava, pineapple, coconut cream, passion fruit, lychee, kiwi fruit and mango. In the evening you can’t go past a lū‘au — a traditional Hawaiian feast, followed by live music and skilled hula performances. There are many lū‘au venues throughout O‘ahu. Snorkel in spectacular Hanauma Bay marine sanctuary’s calm clear waters among brilliantly-coloured fish and gentle sea turtles. This gorgeous bay lies between two dormant volcanic craters on the south-west tip of O‘ahu and its shallow waters are home to a wide variety of marine life, making it one of the best places to snorkel on the island. Gear rental and lockers are available on site. Entry is US$7.50 per person (closed on Tuesdays). A local company, Snorkelfest, operates small-group tours (visit snorkelfest.com). Succumb to a sensuous spa treatment infused with island ingredients such as chocolate, macadamia nut and coconut. Swim and snorkel with wild spinner dolphins by booking a tour. A truly memorable and exhilarating experience! Take a tandem surfing lesson in Waikīkī or on the North Shore with one of the world-famous surf schools. Lessons run between one to two hours and are taught by experienced surfers in gentle breaks. Honour the fallen with a visit to Pearl Harbor. Located just 30 minutes’ drive from Waikīkī, Pearl Harbor encompasses five historic sites commemorating the events occurring at this National Historic Landmark in 1941 during WWII. The devastating aerial attack by the Japanese Naval Forces on Pearl Harbor resulted in 2,390 dead and hundreds wounded, and drove the United States into World War II. While general admission is free, it’s best to book a tour with your travel agent or online via recreation.gov prior to departure for a well-worthwhile look behind the scenes.
