The Hawaiian Islands: Maui 20 ROMANCE HAWAI‘I BEST COUPLE ACTIVITIES Maui’s diverse geography provides a sprawling canvas of adventures. Favourite couple activities on Maui include: • Awaken your senses with a drive up scenic Haleakalā Crater to Ali‘i Kula Lavender Farm, showcasing more than 30 varieties of lavender. • Take the scenic Road to Hāna and hike to one of East Maui’s spectacular waterfalls to discover tiered, swimmable pools for a refreshing dip. Allow four to eight hours (round trip). A visit to remote Hāna in East Maui is like stepping back in time. Undeveloped and pristine, you can sense the tradition and Aloha that surrounds this lush town. • Go horse riding through Upcountry Maui and become a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) for a day. • Charter a boat or take a sunset cruise. A sailing charter through the calm, clear waters of the ‘Au‘au Channel between Maui, Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i, is likely to encounter migrating humpback whales from December to May. • Dine on Maui’s sumptuous farm-to-table cuisine at one of the many superb restaurants. Then stroll hand-in-hand under the moonlight across a serene beach. • Discover the lush ‘Iao Valley State Monument. Home to the ‘Iao Needle, one of Maui’s most famous landmarks, this is the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai, where the forces of King Kamehameha I conquered the Maui army in 1790. Culturally and spiritually significant to Maui, this beautiful heritage site is the perfect spot for a short, relaxing hike that’s complemented by historical markers describing the battle. If the thought of all that natural goodness is making you hungry, then Maui farmers’ markets are a must-see — or rather, a must-eat. If you mosey up the side of Haleakalā to Upcountry, the farmers’ markets there are right in the heart of farm country, so “fresh-picked” can mean just an hour ago. The Upcountry Farmers Market is known for its diversity, boasting everything from homemade banana bread and husked coconuts, to fresh fish and lilikoi (passion fruit) butter. As we say in Hawai‘i, ono (delicious)! • Get a bird’s-eye view of Maui’s sparkling white sand shores, sapphire blue water and rugged mountains on an aerial adventure during your visit. From helicopter tours to parasailing, there are plenty of ways to get a different perspective on the island’s natural beauty. • Head to the beach*. Maui boasts more than 48km of beautiful beaches. On these world-famous shores you’ll find white-, black- and red-sand beaches, renowned surfing and windsurfing spots as well as some of the best beaches in the world for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. Many are easily accessible beach parks with lifeguards, picnic facilities and restrooms. Others are undeveloped, ‘secret spots’ found off the beaten track. Popular spots include: south — Makena Beach State Park, Kamaole, Keawakapu, Kīhei, Polo and Wailea; north-west — Kā‘anapali; west — DT Fleming Beach Park and Kapalua; central — Kanaha Beach Park. • Invigorate the palette only an hour’s drive from Wailea at MauiWine — the home of ‘Maui Splash’ and ‘Maui Blanc’. • Island hop from Lāhainā to Lāna‘i by ferry — it’s a great way to spend the day!
